Obviously we had been having a fantastic run of form and results after the break, so this performance and drastic drop in quality was hard to understand and difficult to take and it hurts.
Scott Brown started poorly and got worse, while Simunovic had a 'mare at the back and made everyone around him a bag of nerves. Taylor, Rogic, Cal-Mac and Eddy started well enough, but any chances they created were once again squandered and gradually gave them confidence.
It was a carbon copy of the Cluj game in some ways - only they are not a patch on Cluj and were made to look good by our own failings.
It's a sore one to take, but we rarely get beyond February in Europe anyway; but because Sevco got through it's going to invite excess criticism and a media frenzy When all it does is reduce fixtures and gets us out the Thursday club.
I know we will bounce back from this as we can't simply play that poorly again two games running, but an away cup-tie in Perth is a good place to take out any frustrations.
I do have one other concern regarding the squad and that is the non-participation of both January signings after several weeks?
All other clubs that made January signings have used their players to some effect, while we have been left waiting and wondering? The managers statement on bringing in additions that could hit the ground running - has jolted to a halt.

Domestic dominance for me is always a priority - as with that you get the bonus of European football automatically and hopefully progressively as the players gain confidence/ experience, as we have shown so far winning a hard group.

The way I look at it; if we get knocked out - then it's the end of the Sunday-Thursday cycle with the early kick-offs and travelling and we focus on retaining our trophies.
However, If we keep up our winning momentum and go as far as we can - it rebuilds our reputation in Europe and maybe helps to keep our better players at the club and even attract more quality in the window?
Any way, it's a win-win for me.

That was the hardest match and the biggest result since the winter break against a very difficult opponent AND Hurricane Dennis.
They handled the conditions and our initial formation really well and although we got the early goal, we never managed to keep the ball - never mind dominate possession - and play the way we usually can.
I am absolutely delighted with the win, the manner the whole team battled for the 3 points and the way NL saw what needed to be done and changed it to a back four and switched several positions to regain control at a time when Aberdeen looked like they could take a point and dent our run.
That was a huge result Celts.

The very difficult opponent, hurricane Dennis and Jonny Hayes!

Is the recall of Ewen Henderson a precaution in case we don't get anyone else in before deadline day - or worse still losing someone?
We were apparently hoping for either a centre half, a winger and maybe another striker, - although I suppose we still have three days.

He was recalled because he wasnt getting a game.

2.) 28 Jan 2020 10:51:18
Henderson is back because he’s not had much game time at Ross county mate. no point him being there if he’s not playing. either he will go back out on loan or he’ll stay and learn from better players than he would at county.

{Ed007's Note - Henderson can't go out on loan again this year, Danny, he's played for 2 clubs this seasonand that's the limit.}

3.) 28 Jan 2020 11:11:02
Danny I thought you could play for 3?

{Ed007's Note - You can be registered with 3 clubs in one season but can only play matches for 2 of them. Remember Scott Bain when we signed him, he had played for Dundee but never played a game for Hibs so was allowed to move to Celtic.}

4.) 28 Jan 2020 11:23:36
Hi Ed are we still confident in bringing in 1 or 2 new players?

{Ed007's Note - Yes we are.}

5.) 28 Jan 2020 11:36:29
Nice wan ED fingers crossed CB at least for me what’s your thoughts on it?

{Ed007's Note - The same as they've always been, a CB and someone who can play LW.}

6.) 28 Jan 2020 11:40:30
Thanks for clarifying Ed πŸ‘.

{Ed007's Note - No probs buddy πŸ‘

7.) 28 Jan 2020 11:51:11
Cheers ED 007 for the hard work any name u would like to c in?

{Ed007's Note - Not really.}

8.) 28 Jan 2020 12:24:39
Cheers guys; I liked the Henderson brothers and hope Ewen - the remaining one - has a future with Celtic.

9.) 28 Jan 2020 12:50:47
What about soul Bamba 6 month loan?

Went a bit quiet since the Soro news; so has he signed yet, or is it a work permit issue or worse?
Just getting a wee bit frustrated as was expecting a lot more urgency since the winter break ended without the arrivals NL had predicted and we still have problem areas to address.

Celtic_mad

{Ed007's Note - Sorting out all the paperwork for non-EU players takes time and Soro can't enter the UK without a work permit.}

1.) 22 Jan 2020 13:15:52
He’s being measured for a treatment table πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚.

2.) 22 Jan 2020 14:16:10
Lennon commented on it yesterday.

3.) 22 Jan 2020 15:28:58
All the more reason to get the ball rolling as quickly as possible in these situations when time is a factor. We seem much quicker at shunting players out the door than snapping players up sharpish.

{Ed007's Note - We should definitely bring in a load of players so that fans can then moan that we've got too many on the books and need to get some out the door like they have for the last few years.}

4.) 22 Jan 2020 15:59:22
Some people are never happy if we sign too many it's a fault if we take our time it's a fault.

It's not who they are signing - as none of them are better than what we have - it's probably the fact they are doing last-minute business, while we seem to have finished - even though we needed player (s) .

Big test for MJ, but it gives us the balance and natural positions to allow our best players to play their natural game and there is a strong and versatile bench - just in case. COYBIG.

Sinclair gave us three seasons of 60 goals and a few assists. Morgan and Johnston can only dream of this, Elyannouusi is only here temp.
James McLean will never match up to those stats either, so we really need to go after like-for-like as well as another striker.
Although we are two points clear at the moment, it's paramount that we continue winning and with added firepower - winning convincingly.

It would be great to sign him - as long as he wants to come back? However there will be a few things to sort out and overcome before any deal can be done and if it's not possible, then we need to look elsewhere asap, as I am not keen on reverting to Gordon or Bain.

It's been posted before and I know there were a good few individual errors - but why does NL tamper with a successful line-up in these important games. OK Ntcham and Christie were unavailable, but Eddy needed his strike partner and the backline didn't need tinkering?
Said last night that we hadn't gone further than Feb in Europe since 2003/ 04, but we had a great chance last night against a team with no more talent or class than we had - but once again we threw it away.

The backline was very nervous from the start and both Jozo and Ajer had a few tricky situations; Jozo also gave away some soft corners.
My other main concern in the first half was Broony being dispossessed and getting caught up the park, leaving gaps quite a few times.
The only pass marks for me were Rogic (for an hour) , Taylor, Cal-Mac and Eddy created some chances - even though the striker was isolated and was left with too much to do as both wide-men were ineffective.

I can't remember all three centre backs playing well at the same time and seem to take turns on making costly mistakes or howlers. We get away with it domestically, but never in European games at this stage.

You could name loads of players that were either bought or brought in on loan, that never made the grade or struggled badly and were a complete waste of time/ money and it far outweighs the successes.
De Vries Gamboa Toljan Hendry Compper Blacket Janko Allen Eboue Benyu McKay-Steven, Musonda Arzani Bayo Shved and then there's Burke and Weah, who NL never really fancied after taking over. Hayes and Bolingoli are seen as last resorts and the two latest January signings have not broken through for whatever reason?
There is real quality in the team as we have seen them at their best, but when a few are injured or struggling for form, we are bereft of class to fill those gaps in key areas.
Every summer we lose at least one top player and we need to stop economizing or making-do with quantity over quality or else?

Missed most of it because of streaming problems all night; but saw enough to see a good few never really got out the blocks from KO.
As usual we missed a fair few chances - as is happening far too often - but we gave away possession and made too many defensive errors to win any game - never mind a EC tie, in the balance.
The team was good enough to win IF hey had all done their jobs. However, this was not the case and NL took too long to see it and change the personnel and system.
The penalty was a Godsend, but we lost the plot immediately after it and once again we are talking about learning lessons and players not handling big game pressure and that's a shame after the way the team has played after the winter break.
So, Sevco stay in Europe for another couple of games, but we have to shake this off and retain our trophies and take the disappointment out on the rest of the domestic opposition H and A.
