Lawell has low balled them as per usual ? to be fair I’ve never heard of him. It would be nice for a change to see us go out and just spend 5-6 million on a couple of really decent players from Europe, I appreciate you can pick up bargains but our strike rate is not the best . On the face of it he seems another project type player. We have money in the bank,
Just dip into it a little and speculate to accumulate for once .

There are two ways to go about this.

1. Speculate To Accumulate.

Go out and buy the players we need - spend a bit of money and get the players in. Offset the cost by selling/ loaning fringe players to get them off the wage bill. Net spend could end up positive.

2. The Risk Averse Method.

Sell/ Loan out the fringe players to accumulate a figure and then buy players within the amount raised. Net spend could end up negative or break even.

Guess what one looks like the Celtic method?

How often do people need it pointed out to them that Peter Lawwell is the chairman, not the CEO?

Quinn, I don't see how he's a project when he's 24 and a fully established first team player. Is that just the label we give to anybody who's fairly cheap now?

I don’t need it pointing out Kev, but I can’t for one minute believe that a man who basically ran the club from top to bottom for years, like it was his own money. Who now has his son in charge of transfers and his protege in charge of the ceo role, that he won’t have some input into the running of the club even if it’s “advice or a sounding board for ideas “. You obviously don’t so I suppose we will have to agree to disagree on this one.
My main point was that I would love us to splash out a bit more for a greater chance of higher quality. It took us about 2.0 years to break our transfer record in an era where fees are spiralling. To me it screams out of penny pinching especially with what’s at stake and what we have in the bank.
If sevco was in the same situation they would definitely put their foot down on us.

Kev, I wouldn’t know if he’s a project to be honest but he’s been a quite a few big teams and has never made it any. If we sign him I hope he does well but this move to rapid is the only one that’s seems to have worked out at 24 . Any move is a gamble though, we hadn’t heard of jota until he signed so I’m more than willing to give him a go . Could be a yang, haskan or jota for all I know.

So you actually think the CEO and head scout are basically puppets and put their jobs on the line letting the chairman dictate what they do ??
Lawwell never once ran the club like it was his money, he was an employee, he had a mandate that came from the major shareholder and the board of directors. If they weren't happy with the job he done he'd have been gone long ago, just like dom Mckay.

Your calling a player a project, celtic fans buzz word, even though you know nothing about him? ?.

The main crux of my point was that we basically had a terrible window in the summer, where signing 9 players and using two of them regularly is shocking planning. Shopping in the two to three million pound bracket window is a low ball mentality where you are rarely going to find gems to improve us. We are weaker than last season and a couple of established players in a higher bracket would give us more of a chance of improving. Our recent signings in that bracket, jota ccv and eddy improved us. As for lawell losing his job, there is no danger of that even after the failure he has been for us.
His strike rate for finding decent players is poor, whether he is putting forward better players in a different price bracket we will never know. It seems that recently we have reverted back to the old formula of 7-8 players of 2-3 million pounds instead of 3 5/ 6 million pounds players who would improve us.
It’s all about options I suppose, you have yours and I have mine . We all want the best Celtic team we can possibly have at the end of the day.

You're bang on Quinn, the 2 million price bracket we shop in has been toxic for us. We've wasted millions on players like Soro, Klimala, el Hamed, Bolingoli, Shved, Comper, Bayo, kouassi to name a few, there's a helluva lot more than that.
I know its not guaranteed but when we do spend that bit more, they usually work out, CCV, Jota, Kyogo, Edouard and going further back Lennon, Sutton and Hartson who were all 5-6 million pound signings and that was 20 odd years ago. Apart from French Eddy it's no coincidence Daddy Lawell wasn't in the building for any of those more expensive signings. I've no complaint on the amount we spend, it's how we are spending it.

That's why we end up with a squad of 30+ players because we bloat the squad out with projects that offer little to the first team and sit on decent wages that they won't get elsewhere and run down their contracts. 3 players in the £5-6m would improve the first team and you sell the odd player to balance the books. Most players have a shelf life and will want to move to better leagues. We sell them for profit and replace them with a high quality replacement in the £5-6m bracket again. That's where we go wrong always trying to find a project bargain and waste money and wages.

Before we brought in all the young players that we have as (Celtic business model) the foundations should begin place first . what I am trying to say is experienced first team players ones that have a lot off experience in the game THEN bring in young players to cover and eventually take over. Not just being in players because they are young play in the position we want and hope for the best, If he doesn't work out bring in another young player before we know it we have a squad that is really bloated and can't get rid of them does anyone know a club like that? Give you a clue if you don't 6 letters starts with C.

Because fans don’t have players in their Panini sticker albums they are classed as project players. Lots of our players are fully established internationals so that means they are in the top 30-40 players in their respective countries. Some folk really don’t get football or understand it… they just wet their panties.

Just because fees are spiralling doesn't mean quality is spiralling as well, look how much they spent on Lammers and the other one, would rather we were prudent and picked up the MoRs and the like, less expensive but more quality.

Good read of the above posts. Just a note, that when we say we've never heard of a particular player when he's linked or bought. that's no real surprise. We'd be lucky to have heard of about 5% max of all the players currently playing globally. It's probably more like 1%. Realistically can anyone name 5 players in the Danish league? Or Swedish league? Can anyone name a single player in the Polish league? For the most part the vast majority of our signin,gs from abroad will be unknown to most.

{Ed007's Note - How many of us had heard about Jota, CCV, MOR, Dembele, Eduard etc etc

Don’t get me wrong lads, I know we won’t have heard of loads of these players but I again my point is that we probably need to go to a higher level of funding just to ensure we get a better quality player. Apart from mor above the others were all rated over 5 million pounds. For all the mor we find we have wasted loads on others which I’d say far outweighs the good ones we have found. I know it doesn’t always work out both ways either, just look at Lagerbielke for instance, probably no one had heard of him. A full international young, defender of the year in his league, you couldn’t call him a project and yet the management team want him out . for the price bracket we potentially could be shopping in we still aren’t going to get established players from German English Spanish sides so we probably aren’t going to have heard from them, just feel there’s a better success rate with a slightly higher transfer fee option.

Our scouting runs just over 40% hit rate. Actually has went down since Lawell son has come on board. Its a trading model about future sales. Not what the team needs. Folk saying VVD, Eduard ect is counter balanced with piles of bad buys.

The good yin get sold to cover the loses on the bad buys. Then squad is top heavy with dross. Rinse and Repeat.

Hatate and MOR will be sold in the summer to paper over the recent disaster.
