hi ed how you doing mate hope the leg is ok, was just wanting to know your overall opinion of rd and also if you have heard anything from timmaloy.ps hope you and tim are ok.macca

wullie mac

{Ed007's Note - I'm good thanks, Wullie, I hope you're well. I heard from Tim 2/3 days ago, he is getting there and is getting out the house a bit more for a wee walk here and there, I'm sure he'll be happy to see your post, his Mrs has still banned him from the computer but he still manages a fly read at the site.
I've been really impressed with Deila so far, I felt that even in his first interview he showed more positivity than NL had throughout the last 2/3 years. The way he is approaching the job is like a breath of fresh air and given time I have no doubts he will take the club onto more success and we will hopefully see a vast improvement in Europe over the next few seasons as his methods and philosophy are implemented. Are you pleased with him so far?}

1.) I just hope he has more ambition than only getting to the group stages of the champions league.

2.) Alright guys, good to hear that Timbo is doing better. It's horrible to be struck down by something like that. Miss him on the site as he was always one for lightening the atmosphere when it was getting a bit heavy!

In terms of RD, I am with you ed, 'though its early days, I am getting a wee bit Ayr United about the season ahead. Defo more positivity about the footballing side of the club and although NL gave us results we will never forget (thinking about the positives when I wrote that) I am glad we have got a change at the helm. Onwards and upwards!

3.) 13 Jul 2014 17:54:35
LOL @ Ayr United! Am getting that too but not sure how/where some players ie Commons & Mulgrew are gonny fit? Am thinkin it is going to be a more of a "industrious" middle 3 that can pass well , to have a flair front 3 would need to be a 4-3-1-2 for commons to work IMO rather than his preferred 4-3-3 any thoughts on shape/pattern Ed? Would not like to lose Commons especially at PL level atb JB7

{Ed007's Note - I can see Commons starting on the left of the attacking 3 in a 4-3-3, it's either that or as you say a 4-3-1-2 with him playing behind 2 strikers. It will be interesting to see how RD sets them up on Tuseday night

4.) Cant disagree with anything you said ed, it will be interesting though to see how he will set up the team without Broony for so long, i'm like yourself I think when Broony is out we miss that bit of dig and drive, my only worry is there are players who need to move on and I don't think he has enough time to assess and move the ones on that need to move on, but apart from that i'm getting excited for the first time in a long time.ps that's good news about Tim I had my second heart attack in Novmber there so I know what the old yin is going through.incase he asks i'm 40 on Tuesday LoL

{Ed007's Note - 2 heart attacks before 40! That's heavy mate, glad to hear you're doing well but you'll need to take things easy. We'll miss Brown on Tuesday, but we should be too strong for them.}

Hi ed think everyone is in agreement that the youth needs to get a chance, but was just wanting your opinion on how you would go about integrating them into the team.

wullie mac

{Ed007's Note - Over the coming months I would phase out players like Mulgrew, Forrest, Kayal, Stokes and bring in youngsters to get first team SPFL and Scottish Cup experience. Sell those four in the summer and with Samaras leaving and probably Ledley there is plenty of room for the youngsters. At some point something has got to give and they get their chance or they leave, it would be sad to see quality youngsters leaving only to be replaced with more mediocre foreigners.}

1.) Hi Ed, regular reader but first time poster. I am glad to finally see someone writing something about Mulgrew. I have thought that for a while now he has been believing his own press.
Arrowh

{Ed007's Note - Welcome to the site buddy. Mulgrew done a good job when he first came back but he has went back the way and would be best moved on.}

2.) Hi Ed, need to disagree with you on the players you are talking about phasing out. Charlie is a very versatile player, lb, cb, dm and was our player of the year last year. Forrest gets unbelievable stick from our support, I think they expect a messiRonaldo run every time he gets the ball, his end product is better than McGeady's was but he probably needs to increase his goals ratio. Joe Ledley is Mr consistent and every good team in the world has one, nothing spectacular but always available, breaks play up and chips in with a goal. There are players there who could do with a rocket up the jacksie's and giving the boys some game time will do that, but it would be ridiculous to think that the bringing in the boys in place of these experienced pro's would make us a better team. I agree that we should be looking at playing 2-3 of them every week and starting them not putting them on the bench, that allows the squad to rotate and keep everyone on their toes BUT when it comes to the Euro qualifiers you still need experience to get you through some sticky ties, this year the prime example. As a club we do not bring through anywhere near enough young players which is a disgrace considering we have the p[ick of the bets in the country. I think the question is why, is it the managers fault or is it the coaching? Now and next year is a great time to blood some young players but will the support be willing to accept some poor displays even defeats while these kids get their chance?

{Ed007's Note - Just because a player is versatile doesn't mean he is any good, Mulgrew can't even lay claim to a position for himself. Who would you drop for him, Ambrose or VVD, Izaguirre or put him in instead of Biton? Mulgrew is nothing more than an average squad player and with the wages he is on we don't need to pay that for versatility, we have young players who could cover the positions Mulgrew does.
Forrest will be 23 this summer and still plays like an 18 y.o, he has not progressed over the last few seasons at all, his decision making is very poor as is his ability to cross the ball or even beat his man. I don't expect a Messi or Ronaldo run from him, and anyone who does will have a long wait, but that's the battle cry of people who like him, so what do you think he brings to the team seeing as it's you, not me, comparing him to Messi, Ronaldo and McGeady? I do expect our wingers to be able to beat a man, hit the line and put quality balls into the box, you know, the basic stuff any winger should be able to do. It's not me that is comparing him to anyone in particular is it?
I only said about Ledley because the longer he doesn't sign a new deal the more likely he is to leave, I would prefer him to stay but wouldn't be overly upset if he moved on.
Fans are accepting some dire performances just now, why should it be different if there was youngsters in the team? The fans who would complain about it are the ones that think you need to spend money to be a success. Produce good quality youngsters and then you can spend money on a few top players to improve the team rather than just add numbers to the squad. The same fans would be the ones that would see youth promotion as penny pinching from the board.}

3.) Charlie Mulgrew was brought back to be in direct competition with Izzaguire and because he can do a job at CB and lately as a holding mid in the absence of Wanyama he doesn't have a position of his own. It is strange however that he can play as a holding mid against Belgium and not give their superstars a kick of the ball, and yet he isn't valued at his own club, though I think his fans number more than his detractors. I am not comparing Forrest with Messi or Ronaldo what I said was that people expect him to get the ball, take a man on every time, get to the bye line every time, delivery an inch perfect cross every time and every time he shots to score. Forrest has had a lot of injuries and while I agree he needs to work on some aspects of his game maybe a quick look at the likes of Lennon, Valencia, Miralles, Hazard will show that they don't deliver the perfect ball every time and they are perceived as the best in the world. Aiden McGeady was exactly the same, a lot of tricks but poor delivery and his goals to chances created ratio was very poor. Hopefully if Forrest can stay injury free then he can kick on after all he is one of our youth players. Agreed the performances are dire and I would love to see NL play 2-3 kids every game, from the start and force the so called stars to step up to the plate. I would rather the club produced their players than bought them and we have so many kids going through BarrowfieldLennoxtown and yet we very very rarely produce the finished article. Why buy a 20yr old Icelandic striker, can't we produce one from our own ranks, that is the question that the club need to answer. The more we produce from our own ranks the better for the club and the game as a whole remember it was 12 scots who won the big cup.

{Ed007's Note - I couldn't give a monkey's what Mulgrew done against Belgium, it is irrelevant to me, the fact is he is not good enough to stake a claim for a position at club level. For every position you say he can cover we have a youngster that can do the same thing on a fraction of the money.
Tell me then, what do you expect of Forrest during a game? You yourself are agreeing he needs to work on aspects of his game so at nearly 23 how much more do you expect from him, as he gets older he will lose his pace and then what? You can't keep saying he will get better when it's obvious he hasn't so far, I can't see what makes you think that he will in future. The Forrest you see just now is as good as it gets for him and there is no way on God's green earth we would get the same money for him as we did for McGeady.
Our strongest right side is when Lustig and Matthews play there, that says it all.}

4.) 13 Jan 2014 15:41:05
Wouldn't get rid of mulgrew versatility is important for a couple of players in your squad . He might not had a gr8 season but when asked to fill in he doesn't let the team down in my opinion. You said a while ago on Ronaldo messi subject a good player can play in all positions and b4 u say am not comparing them just saying he can play in most and do a job. Although am all for blooding youngsters you need other squad players not just youngsters. If we were playing in Europe and Vvd was injured for a big game ad much rather go with mulgrew than a young bhoy.

5.) Allymac I agree with pretty much everything you said mate. Most sense I have heard on here for a long time. I feel eds rant is a bit unfair but to each his own, mulgrew did stake a claim to his place at cb remember? Then after he won player of the year in that position lenny thought he needed to sign Ambrose? Charlie is a victim of his own success, plays well pretty much everywhere and has the most quality deadball in our squad. I'll agree with ed that lenny should start behaving more like a manager than a rockstar we shouldn't need to goto turkey to try these young guys. But we the fans have made him fear losing so much he sticks with his best team every game regardless of form poor judgement by us all. I think Celtic fans need drama and are creating their own cause the thing they love to hate is gone. It's why most of us are still obsessed with the dark side and poor performances rather than actually supporting the team and manager. But I only support Celtic so have no back up team for when they aren't on form. I hate english football and refuse to watch it.

Darrenbhoy

{Ed007's Note - Darren if Mulgrew staked his claim at CB then why were Ambrose, Steven Mouyokolo and van Dijk signed? Obviously NL doesn't see Mulgrew as a reliable CB. We also have Lustig who can play in the middle and young Lewis Toshney. Add to that players like Marcus Fraser, Eoghan O'Connell and Stuart Findlay who could all play a part domestically. So if there is an injury in the CB department we only need to move Lustig inside and Matthews plays at RB without even playing any youth player. I'd go with Lustig/Ambrose rather than put Mulgrew in there if van Dijk was injured.}

Ed do you know if there is genuine interest in Ings and Vaughan, I see both Burnley and Huddersfield have signed strikers today.

wullie mac

{Ed007's Note - There was strong interest in Vaughan in the summer but the player wasn't keen on moving to Scotland, the only plus point for him was the attraction of CL football. Ings will more than likely move to an EPL team but at a guess that will more than likely be in the summer.}

Ed you will probably be asked this a hundred times but will he be eligible for the europa league? ;)

wullie mac

{Ed007's Note - There's nothing official from UEFA yet but I can't see it being a problem, why would FIFA ratify the deal and UEFA stop him registering? I've never heard of anything like that happening before and with UEFA still to release the official submitted squad lists I really don't foresee any problems.}

Ed do you think we need another right back or is the boy Lars versatile, or is someone leaving perhaps.

wullie mac

{Ed007's Note - I wouldn't be surprised to see one of Lustig or Matthews leaving either in January or in the summer.}
