Lads, If Celtic sign a midfield enforcer to play alongside Calum McGregor, do yous think we could move to a 442 formation playing 2 wingers and two strikers or is this an out dated practice?

For me this is far more productive than 1 up top and a no. 10.

The rule of thumb used to be you needed 4 strikers to go through a season playing 2 up top. Maeda is the ideal deputy for Kyogo and I would sign another 6ft plus battering ram to deputise to big Giakoumakis.

Alternatively, could we adopt a Brendan Rodgers like 4231 with Kyogo playing as an advanced no.10

Wondering what everyone’s thoughts are on this.

Hi KP67

I think it all depends who we are playing. Sometimes when teams are obviously better than us then I think 2 up front leaves us short elsewhere. But when we are obviously miles ahead of certain teams then 2 up top definitely mate.

I have always fancied 2 up top but it does not seem to be the thing as much these days.

{Ed007's Note - We play with 3 up top now, how many is up there in a 4-4-2 so how many is up there in a 4-3-3 and then in a 4-2-3-1? One's a 4 man midfield, one's a 3 man midfield and one's a 5 man midfield.}

2.) 03 May 2022 22:02:59
Aye Ed - the 3 up top is great for some of the "smaller teams" but it leaves us even further short elsewhere if they don't track back. 3 up top is exciting but we get caught too much on occassion.

I prefer the 4 in midfield and two up front and changing to one up front as the opposition dictates. Old school up brining breeds old school thinking.

Listen Ed if it was bloody good enough for Mike Basset then its bloody good enough for me. 4-3-3 my ar*e!

{Ed007's Note - ??? I'm thinking if Ange is going to go 4-4-3 we need a more physical presence that can play a better or more rounded role than Bitton in there (Lewis Ferguson?, could Wee Orally grow into that role?) as the CDM/No.6. with CalMac/Hatate/Wee Orally doing the the box-to-box role with Rogic/Turnbull and even maybe Kyogo as the other role in the CAM/No.10.
A good solid CDM than can play a bit and do the job Ange wants that role to do is a priority for me this summer.}

3.) 03 May 2022 22:26:31
Nail firmly smacked on the head Ed.

If we want to persist with 4-3-3 then we really need to toughen up when we don't have the ball. Maeda up front floats my boat as he is tireless off the ball. Jota much less so but I think he could be coached to do so. When it works its a total joy - when it doesn't, then when I put my hands over my eyes I wish they were flippers.

That mid 3 will be over run every time in the CL if Ange keeps playing that formation - imagine what Real Madrid would do to us after seeing what Bodo achieved against us.

That is why I am fascinated to see who comes in in the transfer window as the type of player that comes in will be a massive give away to Sensei Anges tactics. I can't wait.

{Ed007's Note - We know Pablo's more Gucci than Conor McGregor but why has he not had a chance since his return from injury? Maybe Gucci's the man but I think it looks like it's going to be a big ask for him to claim that role for next season all things considered.}

4.) 03 May 2022 22:38:09
Dunno Ed - good question.

Next time I'm in the Sarrie Heid I'll as Ange what he is playing at!

Ange brought him in so Ange must see a roll for him at some point. He was well aware of him from his time in Japan so there is a plan there. I have not seen enough of him to know how he can really play tbh. One thing is for sure, as he never freatured much this year he will be like a new signing in this team next year. We won (going to win) a double without him so I think his presence will make us even stronger next year.

{Ed007's Note - I agree that Ange must think he has something and he has said Gucci trains well etc so maybe it is just a case of he needs to earn his place/chance again after his injury.}

Like everyone else I am disappointed with last nights sh*t show but let’s face it, the writing was on the wall and we are not one bit surprised. This one is lies 100% with the board.

After having a think about what I would do if I was in Dom Mckay / Ange’s shoes I have came up with the following:

If Edouard goes for 20m and PSG take their 40% cut on the profit, Celtic will have brought in circa £45m on player sales since the end of January.

After bringing in Furahashi, Starfelt, Abada and a few development players we have already spent the best part of £13m.

Joe Hart on a free could be good business as he is better than what we have and could be the commanding vocal leader we need at the back.

We are linked with a Croatian international right back who plays with Legia Warsaw. Guys an absolute baller - Juranovic. He won’t be cheap probably 7 or 8 million but he would be a fantastic signing and would instantly solve the RB problem. This would show real ambition going for this one but Legia could be tough to deal with giving the history.

The lad Itakura who plays for Man City (in the last year of his contract) would be some signing for CH. Japanese international played in Holland the last few years - would be and excellent signing for 2 or 3 million.

I would also look at the Scandinavian leagues for a left back and back up right back - really good value for money in these leagues and can get decent players for buttons.

Next area that needs addressed is the middle of the park. I would pick up Patrick Berg form Bodo-Glimt. He is their captain and very similar to Stephan Johnansen - could pick him up for a couple of million giving he is in the last 6months of his contract. I would also sign James McCarthy on a free to give us some good experience in the middle and would move Calum McGregor further forward into the 10 as I don’t think Turnbull has shown enough to be first name on the team sheet. He has showing flashes of brilliance but don’t think his consistency is anywhere close to where we need it to be.

Finally Edouard needs replaced and I would be going for a big Sutton or Hartson type striker to play through the middle and attack the ball. I would also look for another CF on loan giving the Griffiths situation.

I reckon we need to spend another 22m to take our rebuild costs upto 35m mark. That would still leave 10m profit on player sales.

Question is… does the board have the bottle or ambition to spend that kinda cash and get our club back to where it needs to be?

1.) 29 Jul 2021 20:49:17
Kp can you forward that on to celtic park please?

2.) 29 Jul 2021 20:57:13
The short answer to that is probably no KP.

3.) 29 Jul 2021 21:47:03
I think some of our problems could be solved from our own league rather than gamble on unknown players at this moment who probably don't want to rush to Scotland.
xander Clark or seigress, Ryan porteous, Lewis Ferguson,
Martin boyle
Kevin Nesbitt
I'm not saying sign them all or they are finished articles but they know our league and have all played a fair amount of games and some will be able to improve. I just think we are gambling on foreign players when we have missed good prospects at home in recent years.

4.) 29 Jul 2021 22:03:36
Agreed Jim, I think we should be looking to get ferguson and Nisbett. For right back cover I'd go for Rooney from St johnstone even if we have agreed a deal for buta, which I don't know if its true.

5.) 29 Jul 2021 23:01:03
Zander clark or sigrest is like the way we play football sideways and backwards. Murray is better than Porteus . forrest is miles better than boyle and we've just bought abada. I take doig from hibs and definitely ferguson who is better than soro . christie . and probably turnbull. nesbitt yes but not unless we brought someone else in with him is furi going to be wide or middle? Which would kinda sort that . Berg looks a good player but is he better than ferguson can't see us buying one of them nevermind both . I know most people don't like ralston but he'd do for me as cover.

6.) 30 Jul 2021 01:44:28
I'd take Ferguson in a heartbeat as well as Berg, be good Broony replacements and much more dynamic and we'll have the quality to rotate in the team, I'd move on Ntcham too. Doig in place of Boli. Nisbet in place of Ajeti and Griffiths. And Siegrist along with Hart and move on both current goalkeepers. Net spend wouldn't be too much and the squad will far better off.

With the arrival of Big Ange now imminent, who will be calling the shots on player recruitment now Nicky Hammond is no longer with us 🤔?

Do we think it will be Ange himself or will there already be potential targets identified and sounded out.

Just curious of how it’s going to work without a head of recruitment.

Hopefully we'll move forward with A system where all the relevant people have an influence on the outcome rather than being dictated to by an egotistical CEO.

2.) 09 Jun 2021 23:57:17
Big Peter will still be pulling the strings.

Some cracking fee agent deals this summer if the club is willing to slightly increase their wage structure in lieu of not paying a transfer fee. My pick of the bunch would be the following:

GK: Matt Ryan
29yr old Australian international who has played under Postecogleu at major tournaments. Played in Belgium with Club Brugge and La liga with Valencia; over 125 premier league appearances for Brighton as well.

CB: Steven Cook
Ex Bournemouth captain, 30yrs old, would bring good experience to the back line.

RB: Nathaniel Clyne
At 30yrs old would also give good experience to our back line. Only on 19k per week at Crystal Palace last season - surely worth a punt.

CM: James McCarthy
At 30yrs old still think think would be a good bit of business and would be a natural replacement for Scott Brown. Celtic daft and knows what it’s all about.

LB: Ryan Bertrand
Now i think this one would be slightly out our reach giving his last contract was for around 60k per week but would be a fantastic addition if he was willing to take a drop in wages.

I have also read reports that Ben Davies will be available this summer. Would be great if we revised our interest and got him on board for a couple of million; would be a fantastic signing in my opinion.

Would still need another few top drawer signings but would be no bad assembling the above for next to nothing albeit they would all be on circa 30/ 35k I would imagine.

PS: Ed and Paul keep up the good work with the podcasts 👍 Cracker yesterday with Gavin and Chris giving their opinions on Ange; great listen.

KP67

{Ed007's Note - Thanks mate 👍

1.) 07 Jun 2021 23:08:51
I thought Bournemouth were poor at defending.

2.) 07 Jun 2021 23:21:13
KP that’s an interesting and realistic list apart from bertrands wages possibly, I genuinely believe each of those would be an improvement on what we have in respective positions, I’d be happy with anyone of those if signed although I’ll admit I’ve not seen much of Clyne since Liverpool days, would genuinely be interested in Ryan as a number 1 and James McCarthy who everyone says is injury prone but did manage 50 prem games in last 2 seasons but again who knows what wages these guys are on.

3.) 08 Jun 2021 00:26:38
Great post KP67, id go for clyne bertrand and ryan.

I like to see a bit of research and optimism on possible future signing and its the main reason i come on here.

. Ill be shocked if we don't take advantage of the frees available this window, given the Quality that's available.

4.) 08 Jun 2021 05:26:18
I think we're still to see the best of Barkas but I'd immediately feel more confident with Ryan. Obvious links to Ange.

Cook would be a decent squad player but without Howe I think that's a no-go.

Clyne is a bam.

I've had the exact same thought process about McCarthy. Without Brown he might just add that bit of drive, leadership and dig. The fact he's a solid CM helps too.

Bertrand doesn't do enough in the opponents half for me but this season I just want our defenders to defend. Would be a good signing but can't see it at all.

I've looked at that same EPL released list I think you have KP67 and in Ryan and McCarthy you've picked 2 of my 3 👍. I'd add Felix Nmecha to that list. Not sure if this is a mistake or if there's a problem with his attitude but providing he isn't on silly money for a 20 year old and passes a background check get him in. AM with 9 in 19 for Citeh's U23s. Been picked as captain.

5.) 08 Jun 2021 11:15:02
Not disagreeing with you. Most are over the sell on age so there will be no resale profit.
We have to buy young and ready to go get them better make a profit that's mainly what Celtic success in the transfer market is about. Our wage bill according to many on here is stupid money not sure how they would even know what any Celtic player is on as they don't. it has to be halved.
Let's look what st Johnston have do with a minimal budget clubs are judge by there success winning trophy's etc so does that mean st Johnston where the top dogs last season with a small budget.

6.) 08 Jun 2021 11:59:38
The problem with making a profit in the transfer market is Andy is that often you're left with a weaker side. That's not a success in my eyes mate.

7.) 08 Jun 2021 12:03:36
Mostly agree with your views Andy 👍 but for me we need a mix of youth and experience. The wage bill is already reduced with Broony, Eddy, Ajer and a few others inc the loans being sold/ going back to their clubs but no doubt, it should be nowhere near 50M per annum.

I think we should look at investing big on the 'spine' of the team which is where the Free agents should come in (inc Taylor in goals) .

Guys like Nisbet from Hibs and some other younger players who have already have regular first team football under their belts and can come on and change games should be bought to make up the first team squad.

After his antics last season I'd offer LG 'pay as you play' as we need Strikers or potentially a swap deal for player (s) at Hibs if he doesn't like the terms. He's supposed to be on 15K a week and I'd be surprised if Ange hasn't already done his homework on Griff, we'll see.

The X factor here could be players from Asia (Australia, Korea and Japan particularly) the big guy I'm sure will have a list and some could be very handy.

If it's Ange coming in we need to back him 100%, let him pick his own coaches and players (hopefully alongside a D. O. F) but I won't hold my breath. 🤔

Just my thoughts.

8.) 08 Jun 2021 12:59:53
Hopefully we can pick up a few gems from Asia and Australia.

9.) 08 Jun 2021 13:01:20
I'd usually agree with you Andy but after the disaster of last season I think it's important to get a good mix of experience. Would pay for itself if we won the league for the CL money so definitely worth it.

10.) 08 Jun 2021 13:44:14
Offer Griffiths a pay as you play deal - come on Pedro he should have been sold immediately last season when he came back a mess.

He should be out the door and if he had any decency he would refund his wages or give it to charity - talk about a person stealing a wage - he’s right up there.

11.) 08 Jun 2021 18:10:38
I would quite like Mat Ryan as he’s a good keeper who is comfortable playing out from the back which is the new manager’s preference however he isn’t a free agent, his Brighton contract runs till next summer, he’s obviously played under AP for his national team, I’m not convinced that he’d come up to Scotland though, I personally think Barkas will get another chance.

12.) 08 Jun 2021 20:40:36
Fair doos lads. No guarantees with any of it. I just think gd young players build them up get them up to speed let all the media build our young players up, let's make a profit and go again. We have bought do many up and coming gems then they rot as they don't get a chance as certain managers are not gd enough to show these kids the way and take a risk in them,

13.) 08 Jun 2021 20:47:34
I hear you Kev T2 but we're down to the bare bones in terms of first team players and particularly Strikers.

I've got a feeling Ange might tell LG to bolt and bring in his own bhoys.

14.) 08 Jun 2021 21:01:39
Leicester are looking at Bertrand. I'd say the only realistic targets would be McCarthy and Ryan. Wouldn't knock back either.

I watched the lad Itakura play against Spain at the Olympics today. Definitely not the dominant centre half we are in dire need of although he was very comfortable on the ball and not to dis-similar to big Ayer the way he brings the ball out from the back. Actually think he would be a better defensive midfielder.

Would still take the guy in a heartbeat but we are crying out for a dominant centre half that just attacks any balls into the box and anything that gets in the way. Another big Bobo or Varga type player would be ideal.

Seen someone suggest on Twitter the other day that we should get Martin O’Neil to scout a centre half lol actually thought it was no a bad idea.

I agree Pedro - think we need someone with a bit of presence in the middle of the park. I think the lad Itakura looks good enough to play the role but would rather he was signed to partner Starfelt. Still think James McCarthy could do a turn on a free.
