Was baffling to see some of the names in the SFWA young player of the year nominations.

Why was Nathan Patterson there when he only played 11 games?

Why was Stephen Welsh there when he had not been a regular starter?

Why was Like Abada not there as he was the standout candidate?

Abada has scored 15 goals and contributed 10 assists. For a young winger in his first season, they are incredible stats and no one on the list even comes close.

Abada should have been there.

Abada doesn’t qualify for young player award. Think you have to be able to play for Scotland under 21s to be considered.

Scottish players only chaps.

Was Ali McCann not nominated and he plays for Northern Ireland?

Technically you are correct that McCann plays for NI Ange, but the boy was born in Edinburgh and is Scottish.
Maybe that's why he qualified, maybe the rule is that the player must be born here but it doesn't matter what national team he has chosen to play for.

{Ed007's Note - McCann's father is from NI.}

Ryan Kent won the award in 2019 and he isn’t Scottish.
The award is for the best young player to play in Scotland this season.
Ryan Kent had his best statistics in season 2018/ 19 season with 6 goals and 8 assists in all competitions including Europe.
Abada this season has had 15 goals and 10 assists already this season and the young Celtic player doesn’t get a nomination.
Abada was the obvious choice and most people’s favourite to win the young player of the year award but he doesn’t get a nomination.
Surely there is something seriously wrong considering the statistics above.
As it stands young Welsh is One league game short from receiving a league medal if Celtic clinch the title and Patterson is 4 league matches short and he won’t receive a title medal if a miracle happens and Sevco win the league.
It’s a disgraceful decision and a slap on the face to young Abada who has played in 33 league games for Celtic this season and he will definitely have earned his league title medal.

Buzz, its not a slap in the face of Abada, he is literally ineligible for the award.

brumbhoy,
Can you explain how Stan Petrov, Jason Denayer and Ryan Kent are previous winners?

{Ed007's Note - Buzz this is the SFWA Young Player of the Year (Scottish Football Writers' Association Young Player of the Year). It still gets pretty confusing though, have a look HERE and HERE unless I've got mixed up as well.}

Sorry Ed and brumbhoy, you are both correct and it makes more sense now.
It is the Scottish writers and previous winners have all been Scottish.
I’m sure Abada will win the PFA Young Scottish Player Of The Year Award or that will be another debate. ?.

Ali McCann's dad (Ian) and I grew up together as kids. We lived about 100yds apart. I was passionate about football but his main interest was rugby. He's a partner in a law firm in Edinburgh. HH.
