The same day of the Hillsborough disaster, Celtic Park staged a 1989 Scottish cup semi final clash between 1st division St. Johnstone (luck of the draw) v Rangers.
Similar to Hillsborough, a gate was opened, which resulted in too many supporters gathered in the one section, which caused an overspill. The Rangers fans were lucky they were not trapped like the Liverpool fans and managed to spill onto the running track.

The attendance that afternoon was officially 47k, which is 13k short of capacity. ( Celtic v Hibs the next day was 42k. reports suggested that attendance was affected by the events of Hillsborough the previous day )
It’s been mentioned that the attendance was 23k more than the official attendance at £15 a ticket and Celtic pocketed the difference.
First of all it was only 13k short of attendance and it was only £6 a ticket 30 years ago.

Secondly the Sfa run the Scottish cup and the money from the 2 semi finals is split between the 4 teams, probably after the Sfa take their cut and expenses.
If the Kelly’s and Whites were pocketing 23k x £15 for only one game tax free, I don’t think Celtic would have been in so much financial turmoil.

Nowadays the attendance will be given as 57k and the sevco fans are complaining that the ground is empty. So now we are being accused of paying too much taxes.
It was also mentioned that it doesn’t matter if you use only one Ebt or 20 because it is just the same.

I will have to disagree with that statement. Celtic used an Ebt with Juninho and when we found out it was dodgy, we then PAID the tax which was owed on that single Ebt. Rangers used the system over 70 times and they must have known it was also dodgy and Rangers had the choice similar to Celtic but they chose to keep using the dodgy Ebt scheme and have still NOT PAID a single penny owed in players taxes.
I wouldn’t say that was anywhere near the same.
