Celtic XI: Gordon; Matthews, Denayer, van Dijk, Izaguirre; Brown, Bitton; Commons, Johansen, Forrest; Griffiths

Subs: Zaluska, Ambrose, Guidetti, Scepovic, Tonev, McGregor, Tierney

Looks a good line up let's hope the bigger pitch helps us stretch a tight Inverness defence.

Ajax, Fenerbache and Molde.

Some good ties let's see how far we have come over the past few years when we reaquiant ourselves with Ajax.

Fenerbache will be a great atmosphere as they are a real passionate bunch and maybe a little hairy going over there.

Molde have been spoken about the past few years people always looking to avoid them in Champions league playoffs.

Will be difficult but let's hope we get a few new recruits and get our dodgy defence sorted and we may just get a little run in this comp.

A great draw quality teams with Ajax and Ferbache playing before very passionate fans. This will be good experience for our players .both of the above clubs and their fans would have expected to be playing in the Champions League . We certainly have quality and skill to look forward to.

On present European form team will be lucky to accumulate 6 points in this group.

Ed and other users of site, with so much been said before about our clubs new fitness regime and how important it is for us to be super fit so we can play with a high tempo game for 90 minutes, does anyone else think that we play high tempo football for 90 mins?

Over the both legs we started brightly and played at high tempo but we allowed Malmö back into the game by slowing down and almost not looking too bothered how much effort was put in.

So over the 180 mins I reckon we played high tempo stuff for roughly 30 mins give or take. Is this really what we have succumb to?

Zonal defending, why oh why do we even bother, we can't do it. From O'Neil to Deila they have all tried it and not one has had any success in Europe from it at this level. Let's get back to man on man then we know who's at fault when he loses his man.

Charlie Mulgrew has really been found out tonight, out of position, inept of pace and passing out of defence were shocking the boy needs to get over himself. Hopefully this will be the last time we see him in a Celtic Jersey.

Brown usual Mr Consistent has went backwards this season led to two goals last week and his staring people out to try and scare them off act is getting rather pathetic. I would rather see him using the skills for which he gets paid for. Browns first couple of seasons with us he used to really annoy me with constant whinging and picking up needless cautions I thought he had moved on from this stage but it looks as though he may be heading back that way.

All in all if we can't beat the champions of Sweden;and let's be serious Swedish football is no better than Scottish, then we do not deserve to be in the champions league.

How long before Profit MarginPete balances the books and sells off VanDijk and Bitton.

Well Said frewbhoy. We were woeful all over the pitch. I saw it coming but didn't want to say because the masses would have accused me of not being a real fan. I take no pleasure in being right. I'm gutted, but also relieved, because if we had gone through we'd have been humiliated 6 times in the group stage. RD says the Europa League is our level and it's about time the board did something to change that. It's also about time most of us as fans also accept that's where we are as a club. I imagine it's goodbye to VVD now and good luck to the lad too. This has to be the time for a cull of the deadwood in our squad. Let them go for free if needs be, just get them out. As for RD?? Well I just don't know about him. His lack of experience is clear for everyone to see. What you said about Broony is spot on too. He's an ok player with a big heart but his mind games are only highlighting his other shortcomings in his game.
Anyway, nothing more to say really. We're going to have a fight on our hands to retain the league title this year so don't be thinking it's a done deal on that score either.

Hail Hail

I remember the transition period at the start of last season and the emphasis placed on diet, fitness and stamina by the new regime as we faltered at the start of the season.
There is no doubt that we dominate all of our domestic games - as did most Celtic teams, but this high tempo, pressurising and slick play, happens very rarely during games and if anything we look sluggish and pedestrian more than ever.
A year on and Delia has failed to qualify for the CL again and any progress and improvement he promised has evaporated.
The attendances will plummet for the foreseeable future through disappointment, dis-illusion and lost confidence in what direction we are heading.

Van Dijk would not have got back to the ball when Jackson Irvine got round Gordon as he would have struck it at 50mph.

The only way he would get back the 22 yards in time is if he was on a Yamaha 500 and he's no.

Well done neil McCann you talk as much p!$4 as that was coming down on that brolly that was protecting you ya wee niaf.

1.) 01 Aug 2015 18:23:58
How fast was the ball moving frew?

2.) 01 Aug 2015 19:36:24
If was a red card all day long , stupid pass from Boyata and silly play from Gordon

If it was at the other end then we would all be asking for red and I think McCann was spot on with analysis

3.) 01 Aug 2015 20:19:45
Exactly Kev, no doubt he was hurting though lol which was fun to listen to but some people really need to take the green specs off at times. If this same incident happens to us on Wednesday and their keeper got only booked for that we would all be furious. It was a red card and we got away with it, we move on.

Yeah he played alongside Kompany mate, he looked ok, made some telling challenges but also looked like he was being dragged out of position a lot.

The commentator was saying that he looks like becoming a cult figure with the city fans as it looks as though he is going to oust Mangala.

1.) 22 Jul 2015 08:19:38
No doubt the season spent with us will have benefited his confidence and helped his development and good luck to him.
He had an outstanding time at Celtic and made a big contribution alongside VVD.
The pair of them have set a benchmark for the standard we expect and we can't go back to the likes of Ambrose and Mulgrew.

2.) 22 Jul 2015 08:21:39
I thought he looked ok.too,it's early days yet but if he goes on to have a good season it could have a positive spin off for us,as other clubs down south and further afield may be swayed to send their young prospects on loan to us.I know it's not ideal having a lot of loanees but the odd one or two of quality does no harm in the short term. You only have to look at the effect Jason had last season, the fans loved him.

Luca Pratto only signed with Athletico Minero in January this year, I cannot see him moving on so soon.

What does it matter which team a player used to represent.

We signed players from Barca, Real and Milan in the past and none of these exactly set the league on fire.

If a player is good enough it shouldn't matter how much you pay or if he has a fancy sounding foreign name; all that matters is that he can do the job that is asked of him. Up to now the Utd boys have done there bit so let's be thankful we can still sign some sort of player because the way things are going we will be looking even lower than Utd for players in years to come.

Well done to the team tonight good defensive display, sometimes that's what is required in European competitions us as Celtic fans know that only too well.

Where exactly would McGeady fit in to a Celtic team that already has the strongest midfield it has had in years.

He is no better than Forrest now and I wouldn't mind losing him either.

If money is not an option for him then maybe Aberdeen or Hibs will be interested.

Number 7 jersey is just a worthy as any Celtic jersey no matter what number you have on your back you should be able to play to the level us as Celtic fans expect of you.

So wether it be 7, 77, or 87 if he improves the team welcome aboard.

Hey JB is that only 18,000 for launch day or over the whole course of the season?

{Ed007's Note - Mike Ashley asked us to keep the number down so that Zombies don't start fighting as they'r queuing to buy them for their grandkids.}

Yeah I find it strange how flat things have got.

Watching from afar and being used to Celtic park rocking not only on European nights but weekends as well, I can't believe how far the atmosphere has dropped.

There could be many variables to this as you mention ed social media which has consumed our entire existence seems people's perceptions of us means more than what we actually believe in.

Could also be the lack of entertainment on offer and if this is the case how do we as a club address this, couple of creative types that can actually take a man on and turn him inside out. A show boater who gets you there to see his skills alone or maybe instead of wasting money on players who are not pulling their weight try out more of our youth give us something to be proud of a few young boys that instead of being pandered with the lure of the EPL they are happy to play for the club.

If and when VVD goes then let's play O'Connell for the full season it's the only way we are ever going to blood new players.

I have never had the privilege to see the GB's displays in person but I never seen the need for such a thing when the whole stadium used to get right into it. Chants would start from any corner or any tier of the ground, so it's sad to think we no depend solely on a band of supporters to spark some life into the rest. Perhaps it should be the team you pay to watch that excites you that much to start you chanting.

Frewbhoy

{Ed007's Note - We definitely need 1 or 2 players to get the fans buzzing, you're spot on. Those type of players want decent wages though but surely we can get better value for money than Commons and Forrest.
I like you're O'Connell shout, I'd be happy with that but I stil feel we shoukd have Lustig in the middle, they molly coodle Craig Gordon who missed a game with a stiff neck yet ignore Lustig telling them and saying in public that for his own long term fitness he sees himself as a CB. Let Tierney or Izaguirre compete for LB, Rogic needs games, he's been out a long time so play him and if it doesn't work out punt him but RD has been impressed with him in training.
RD has said he wants a core of 22 players with the squad made up with young players but we have players like Forrest, Boerrigter, Mulgrew, Scepovic, Ambrose and even Stokes now clogging up the 22.
We'll never find out how good our youth players are until they get a chance to show us without the torrent of abuse from the stands every time they make a mistake or misplace a pass, it's all part of their learning curve, let's think back to Larrson's first game.
The GB do a fantastic job but the initial idea was to get the stadium jumping, now we've got doughballs sitting in CP watching the GB rather than the match.}

The problem is none of them play to that level at the back, tonight the distribution from the back line was terrible.

Bitton after his goal the standard of his passing was not up to his usual relaxed pressure free style.

A decent manager will have a pacy striker close down Boyata all match when he has the ball at his feet as his distribution skills leave a lot to the imagination.

Izzy again great going forward but lacks a final ball and can't defend.

A great start to the night 2 up with 10mins played and looking like given them a right doing but we fell away and let them right back into the game. Once again a former player comes back to bite us, we really need to start to wisen up to these same problems.

A result but not a healthy one I fear the return leg.

I hate putting the team down like this but it's a worrying trend. Fingers crossed we can get a couple over there.

I would say between McStay and Lambert for me they both read the game so well and the game always seem to flow through these two.

Kev T I think you are being a little over the top towards Lennons lack of ability. I remember having many arguments with fellow Celts during Lennons time playing in the middle, loads would say he offered little to the team and always looked to come back the way. I thought Lennon was great in doing what he done, he was always in there fighting to get the ball and then distributing it more than he lost it.

Another strong point of his was dictating the tempo of the game, when we needed to slow the play right down Lennon would be the one taken it in and short passes out. I think all teams need a player like this in their team.

I rated him more as a player than a manager.
