My abiding memory of the passing of Jock Stein is still very fresh in my mind.
I was on holiday in Spain with my family at the time.
This was before mobile phones and email,we didn't even have Sky tv.
The match was broadcast on Spanish tv with a link provided by Eurovision,the more mature of you will remember this.
I was watching the match in a bar,nothing unusual there, but when the match ended and Mr Stein went to leave the dugout he collapsed, the Eurovision link stopped immediately, not because of what had just happened, but this was the normal practice,as soon as a programme ended so did the link,l think it was purely financial,the Eurovision link was expensive in those days.
I tried to find out what had happened but . In those days news didn't travel quickly, even the British newspapers were 2 days old when you got them.
It was the next day when I found out what had happened, with the help of a Spanish waiter who was a Real Madrid/Celtic fan that was my holiday finished.
I was still in Spain with my family, but I could have been anywhere really,we had lost the greatest manager of his generation and the greatest manager Celtic would ever have.

RIP MR. STEIN

Costa Tim there are lots of anecdotes about Jock here are some I recall, as we know Celtic and Scottish referees have an uneasy relationship well big Jock had a simple answer for any referee he perceived to give unfair decisions against us, in the dead of winter he would inform the Celtic Park tea ladies NOT to give a referee any tea after the match and also instructed the ground staff to turn off the hot water to shower with, the said referees soon got the message.
He also called out any Scottish journalist he thought favoured the old now defunct club down ibrox way. Almost to a man they were too gutless to stand upto his questions.

2.) 10 Sep 2015 21:44:39
I remember reading an article by Jim Craig about a game years ago, Celtic were playing poorly and at half time Big Jock was going round the players one by one giving them pelters , Jim Craig was a sub that day and he said ' I thought I was in the clear as I wasn't playing, but when his turn came , Big Jock said ' and as for you Craig, you're even worse, you can't even get into this team ' .

Who is the bonehead pressing disagree with people's anecdotes about Jock Stein.
Someone from the dark side ,I suspect,
Show a bit of respect for people's memories,. Moron

I hear UEFA have declared the pitch playable,but are refusing to let Celtic train on it??

Costa Tim

{Ed001's Note - that would be a breach of UEFA rules, the away team has to be allowed to train on it ahead of the game.}

1.) 04 Aug 2015 06:07:39
Yes,Ed,I know but it's all over Twitter,we'll see later I suppose,when some of our more informed posters are awake.Up a bit early yourself are you not?

{Ed001's Note - I am always up at this time these days, it is gone 9am here. Be very interesting if UEFA refuse Celtic the right to train on it, Celtic would be well within their rights to force UEFA to allow them to train. UEFA could ask Celtic not to train on it, and Celtic could then accept, but refusal would breach their own ruling. If the pitch is not playable for a team to train on, then they are meant to move the game.}

2.) 04 Aug 2015 08:01:00
Hypothetically speaking ed001 what do u think would happen if Celtic were not allowed to train on it then got put out the following night.

{Ed001's Note - if they were refused permission to train on the pitch, then they would really need to complain before the match and start the procedure straight away. If they wait until afterwards, they might well find that taking part in the game is viewed as a tacit acceptance of the situation. If they do complain, which I would expect them to as any club would do, then got put out, it would lead to an extremely messy situation.

UEFA's own rules state that the game should be played at a different venue on one of the reserve dates anyway, if the pitch is not available to train on. So UEFA would have little choice but to order a replay, anything else would put them on dodgy ground. Mind, with Platini in charge, who is just another Blatter, I don't know if UEFA would care about being on dodgy ground! Simply put though, UEFA would have not a leg to stand on, in my opinion, from what I have read of their own lawbook on the subject.

All in all, if Celtic are forced to play without training and complain about it, the result would likely be overruled by CAS and a replay would be the likely result. There is no way the opponents can be forced to concede the result, as they are doing their part in all this. The only people who are trying to bend the rules are UEFA.}

3.) 04 Aug 2015 08:21:06
If this was Madrid,Barca,Bayern etc they would be out already.

{Ed001's Note - no they wouldn't, but they would not be asking those clubs to play without training on the pitch.}

4.) 04 Aug 2015 09:26:33
Ed is it true that the picture used by the newspapers yesterday was in fact an old picture. And although the park is dry the surface is nowhere near as bad as is being portrayed.

{Ed001's Note - I don't know mate sorry, I tend to avoid anything to do with newspapers, they have no interest in checking facts or ensuring the accuracy of pictures used these days. It is perfectly possible they did use an old picture, it would not be the first time.}

5.) 04 Aug 2015 10:53:27
No bother mate just something I read. Can't even remember where I read it. Whilst your on mate I sat on sat night and managed to download kodi with genesis for movies and modbro for sports all on my £30 android box that would've been binned if it wasn't for your help. I have now saved 35pm on my TV by cancelling just sly sports and keeping bt sports I could've saved a lot more if I switched to bt but wanted to keep the good internet connection I have with Virgin Thanks for your advice mate I appreciate it.

{Ed007's Note - I'll pass that on, Gary.}

6.) 04 Aug 2015 15:42:48
I hope by this evening when they have trained on the pitch , all the Celtic players will get it out of their heads about the bad pitch . By 7.30 Celtic Park time Wednesday , the state of the pitch won't be relevant , all that will matter is that we are through to the next round . We don't want players or the management making excuses .
Qualifying is all that matters , and the players and managers need to remember that and that alone .

7.) 04 Aug 2015 18:57:08
garybhoy, what's the box called, where did you get it, and would you advise it, for an old dumplin to set up?
Cheers

Don't want to be a scare monger on here,this team Qarabag are going to have to be treated with the utmost respect.In the last 2or3 seasons they have had some good results in Europe and they are improving every year,they have beaten,Rosenberg,Wisla Krakow home and away,Brugge ,Salzburg (remember them) and as ed said already they held Inter to a draw.But I think the most impressive fact is they only just missed out on qualifying out of their group in the Europa league by one point, this being a group that included,Inter Milan,Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk and St Etienne, and we all know that Dnipro went on to the final.Qarabag only lost out to Dnipro by away goals in their Europa league games, So I think a lot of caution and respect are called for in our matches with them.What do you think guys?

Costa Tim

{Ed007's Note - I said yesterday that Qarabag could be a potential banana skin going by their record in Europe. I think they could prove a very difficult team to break down.}

1.) 18 Jul 2015 16:47:40
I was one of those yesterday unhappy with a potential marathon trip, but having reflected on things, let's look at the positives, both potential opponents have only just started their own domestic season, so fitness wise they should not be ahead of us, yes if we get Quarabag we face a long 6 hour+ journey, but these days Celtic will hire a jet and fly in comfort and remember Quarabag must also fly thousands of miles to play us. No matter who we get I think Celtic should be able to win over 2 legs or else what is the point of trying to compete with teams like Barcelona, Juventus etc further down the competion. I believe we are much better prepared this season for these qualifiers and I am putting my faith in Ronnie getting us prepared to beat no matter what opponents are put in front of us or how far away they are, difficult ties of course, but not impossible, let us all stay positive and get behind Celtic hail hail

2.) 18 Jul 2015 19:34:33
Let's not forget both if these teams are relatively pish. If we cannot overcome them due to nit being to the standard required then Lawell et all need their arses kicked.

We aren't talking about teams of note.

I expect us to do them easily. If we can't we will get fucking mauled in the group stages yet again.

On the other hand there may be something in the Zlatan one,in a recent interview ,when asked where his next move would be he said it may be surprising,and he is already on record as saying he would one day like to play for Celtic

Not the time of season to be changing your goalkeeper, especially the way things are poised, we need an experienced keeper for these last few games.

Hiddink would not come to Celtic as long as DD is there, there is bad blood because DD . appointed M. ON. instead of him.

Too many players. think they are. playing for Dundee Utd, different kettle of fish here.
I know we were playing the Refs Association again, and they will do anything to stop us winning a treble. tags while Sevco are down,
But it didn't stop us in the 60s and 70s . Because we were FKN GOOD, not now. It only makes it easier for the. Bastards.
