So the poppy saga continues for another year. We'll not go into the rights and wrongs of the Green Brigades protest or the stadium booing them the Scottish MSSM appear to have that covered. But here's my three questions and I was there yesterday. The GB obviously knew about the planned two minutes silence personally I didn't but here goes. (1) Does Celtic normally have a two minute silence on Remembrance Sunday I certainly don't remember one recently if at all? (2) Why did the announcer very deliberately highlight that it was in remembrance of those who fell in WW1 and WW2 'and in subsequent conflicts' which we know includes the atrocities committed by the British in the north of Ireland and which many find offensive and (3) what motivated the club rightly or wrongly to set us up for another potential embarrassment if that's how you see in that the GBs protest was or wasn't in poor taste.

{Ed007's Note - It wasn't just the GB though, there were fans from other sections that stayed outside and there were more than the GB singing the song.}

Ed I’m very deliberately not expressing any opinion as I’m genuinely interested in hearing the (mixed) thoughts of you and my fellow Celtic supporters. However I must take issue in that there was nobody missing that returned to their seats in my section although a few turned their backs and nobody anywhere near me sang the song which was roundly booed. I’m genuinely intrigued by the obvious spilt in the supports opinion and by the club’s actions to be honest.

{Ed007's Note - My nephew said there were a lot of standing on the concourse in the Jock Stein and the other said there was a few in the South Stand, there's pictures on social media showing the difference in empty seats before/after.
I'll take your word for it that nobody near you sang the song - maybe they were drowned out by the booing - but there were more than the GB section singing it according to people there and social media content.
I've had my say on the poppy stuff every year on here, and this is my testimonial year, so I'm not going into it all again. Have a read at THIS, particularly the part the Daily Mail's campaign in 2008 or 2009 against clubs like Man Utd and Liverpool who refused to wear poppies, and now by some strange quirk of fate the pages are no longer available.}

The whole poppy thing is getting really boring and tedious now. The "problems" only started when the Rangers tried to politicise it and turn it into an agenda that suited there narrative and diverted everybody's attention, especially there own fans, away from their basket case of a club and try and show others up in a bad light. They will be the ones to call the phone ins and write on social media about how bad we are etc etc. but they don't want to talk about all the missing poppy money from a few year back!
Who cares if you observe the silence or not. I certainly don't care n respect everyone's choice.

A very good article Ed. Yet I very much doubt even The Independent fully understand the significance of the ‘help our heroes’ displays at Ibrox despite their obvious dig at the Govan patriots for ‘even firing a a cannon on the park’. To be honest I’m more confused by the actions of the club and our fellow supporters than I am by the actions of the GB who’s position at least I understand. Thanks Ed. 👍.

{Ed007's Note - The Club needs to be seen to do something publicly to appease the poppy police hence the minutes silence but I will say this, the money the Club give Poppy Scotland every year at this time helps old soldiers more than any right wing jingoistic display at Ibrox where a bucket collection at a sold out stadium raised £4,837, about 10p a head.}

The comedy news reporter (Jonathon Pie) sketch on YouTube sums it all up in 2 minutes. Check him out. He's a good laugh doing his videos about politicians Brexit Trump and more.

JFP. I remember 3 or 4 years ago there was a silence at a game on the same weekend. I think that a lot of the time we are away from home on remembrance Sunday so it doesn't happen every year.
From what I could hear the announcer asked us to remember those who died in all conflicts then went on to list the names of the Celtic players who had died in the first world war.
In my opinion the whole issue has been hijacked by people who have turned this time of the year into a time for backing the military rather than remembering the ordinary men and women who died through no fault of their own.
I would like to see these ceremonies taken out of football grounds and go back to letting people remember their loved ones in their own way, either by having services at local war memorials or churches. I don't see what it has to do with football.

{Ed007's Note - 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Agreed Gerry 👍 If there is no place in football for politics then that premise must be upheld across the board and not just applied when the opinion expressed doesn’t reflect the views of the established.

JFP You are spot on I was in the forces and fought proudly for my country But it's up to individuals what they do With Servco it makes me sick how they try to show how good they are in supporting their country.

Tony it would fit them better to pay their taxes and you’d think they’d do better than £4k from a full stadium collection as Ed highlighted. My understanding is that Celtic’s contribution to Poppy Scotland is more generous than any other club. We all know what the Ibrox displays are about the Parachute Regiment don’t get pride of place for no reason.

I was there as well yesterday lads.
The announcer lad mention 3/4 names as well and reinforced what the silence was for. I never heard a peep when the silence was on.
I also was very nieve as I wondered where the crowd was at GB AREA. I just thought they must run late. Then few mins later I looked over it was packed. Each to there own lads they could have chosen to sing make noises etc. they chose to come in after the two mins. Fair play it's a personal thing to each individual they have there reasons and made there point without doing anything.

I’m a veteran and the best place for showing respect is at the many war memorials around the nation and not at a football match. What the Rangers done a couple of weeks back was embarrassing. How many people have seen field guns been set off at war memorials on Remembrance Sunday. (None is my best guess) .

It was a total mockery ged and the Sevco infested media chose not to mention the hypocracy and theatrics of it.
As f as I was aware they only use such equipment when it's one o'clock in Embra or a royal salute?

14.) 12 Nov 2019

The way that Sevco try to hijack the whole Remembrance Day is a total embarrassment. i believe the commentator on Sevco TV even called it Remembrance Sunday match. they even move the date to suit them being at home. I am sure there will be someone in the fixtures department at the SPFL being disciplined for them not being at home on the proper Remembrance Sunday.

As usual the media will make a big deal about the GB and others not being in the stadium during the silence, personally I think that it was the best thing to do, ensuring that the club weren't embarrassed by any shouting etc. and surely the whole point of the Remembrance Silence is to remember the brave men and women who gave up their lives so that we all have the ability to make the choices we do today, this includes participating in the silence etc. I proudly wore my poppy on Sunday but did not question others that did not wear one.

15.) 12 Nov 2019
12 Nov 2019 11:22:47
According to Sevco and the medias logic then any Sevco fan who enters Ibrox without a scarf is insulting the team.
They are hell bent on turning the memory of ordinary men and women who through no fault of their own were forced to sacrifice themselves, into a propaganda exercise for the military and a nasty right wing government that we have been saddled with.
I wonder how many of these clowns actually went to a remembrance service, or to church on Sunday to remember the war dead, my guess would be very few.

When Ed said they had a bucket collection and they only raised 4 grand I thought he was meaning at the Livingston game at the weekend.50000 at a Home game so surely it was more than that? Or it looks like some of them have pocketed the money. What an embarrassment they are.

Say there were 48,000 at least for that home game - so that would work out at 10 pence a head. No need to add anything else; apart from how idiotic and embarrassing the whole charade makes them look - and they can't see it lol.
