It is clear that BR wants pace. Nothing wrong with that, In fact very exciting will change the face of Scottish football. Imagine if he had Denayer and VVD at the back and Paul MacStay in midfield. IF this is the plan for the future we will terrify every team we meet including some in Europe.

how many titles did we win when Paul McStay was captain.

Digibanger. Paul McStay was one of the greatest players ever to wear the green and white hoops. He played with more donkeys than their are on Blackpool beach. I've never seen anything nearly in the same class in the middle of the park at Celtic since.

I paid to watch it - and in all my time I don't recall him missing a pass - he was solid - but we didn't win a thing - best thing that happened was he hung up his boots and we then moved forward. Smacks like Arsenal Legend Ian Wright. what did they win went he was no 1 pick - nothing, he moved on and Thierry came thru.

Old good guys are old good guys but when they make way for winners.

I want winners over good guys any day

Another year of PMcS and they would have been signing Ten in a Row.

Matt Le Tissier never won a title after a whole career at Southampton but was World Class. McStay alongside Burns my favourite Tims, What i'd give to see McStay play again. Celtic Legend, hardly his fault the Board at the time we buying the likes of Stuart Slater to play alongside him.

Digi what a stupid comparison mc stay was class and to loyal he just was unlucky to have played when the club was a bit of a mess.

29 Aug 2016 20:52:35
Paul McStay was up there with legends like Lubo and the late great Bobby Murdoch the 3 of them could have walked into any of the great teams in the world, Frank McAvennie summed it up when he said "I never saw anyone get a bigger high than Paul McStay got just by playing for Celtic. "

we all know what its like to get caught up in the passion of our club. But I've always seemed to keep level headed watching them.
The highs - and the lows. EG some of the rumours of Zlatan coming to CP because he said once.

things like that don't happen to us and its just delusional to even think it - its not even a dream - its a mad mans dream!

I am aware of McStays ability and the clubs circumstances at the time, I watched it and live thru it every Saturday.

I was at Jungles Last Stand (we want parrot) - I watched Danny McGrain play LB for Scotland against Yogoslavia (ask your dads kids) , I watched Tom Boyd - diving - to save the ball off the line with his hand against fcuk knows who.

But I for one was happy when we move on for life after mcstay - and its been a pretty good life since.

What a moronic contribution. Paul McStay was incredible. When he was the captain the team and the club was in dire straits. Yet despite all that he had the guts to stay with us, when he could have moved to any number of clubs. I wish he was able to play now. If you think we got better because he retired you shouldn't bother watching football perhaps try Sesame Street on a Saturday.

sorry if I've touched a nerve

just my humble opinion

and I paid every week to watch so recon i'm entitled to it!

As jimmy sanderson used to say - "were you it the game. "

I was.

10.) 29 Aug 2016
29 Aug 2016 21:39:15
I was at the games too and bhoy you are so wrong on this one, indeed a McStay is the exact player we need now someone who could find Griffiths, Roberts and Sinclair with a pass,

Sorry Digi but this time you are wrong very wrong!

29 Aug 2016 21:43:57
Well said Grout64. Digibanger is entitled to his opinion. Just hope that the Maestro isn't reading his comments. If we found Paul McStay today we couldn't afford him.

29 Aug 2016 21:59:09
Digi we are all entitled to an opinion but u really need to wind your neck in pal! Disgraceful comments about a guy who shed blood sweat and tears for our club! Who played through all the years of the old ranges financial doping! Allowing them to equal 9 in a row! And he won 8 trophys with him in the team, including 3 titles! So he didn't not win a thing as u so stupidily said! Do aye u have touched a nerve, big time! There's players in our great clubs history who have earned the right never to be questioned, the lions tommy burns henrik and a few others! And the maestro is one of them! Like another poster said, this is a guy who could have moved on when the club was at its lowest ebb and the other lot were cheating there way to titles! But he stayed and fought for his club! But hey u were happy when he moved on!

13.) 29 Aug 2016
29 Aug 2016 22:16:29
yes he won 4 titles - but not as captain - Roy Aitken was.

Just a quick question - would you describe you Captaincy as a success if you didn't win the title in the entire time of your tenure.

Gifted player - YES
Legend - hmmmm.

14.) 29 Aug 2016
29 Aug 2016 22:34:21
Paul McStay was a very good midfielder, but to say that he was one of the greatest ever Celtic midfielders, just show you that you don't know what you are talking about, Paul was a good, solid, honest, Celtic to the heart player, but creativity was never anything I associated him with, and that is one thing s truly great midfielder must have.

15.) 29 Aug 2016
29 Aug 2016 22:47:01
sorry again guys

it was dark days for us, I particularly being excited that Gary Gillespie signed from Liverpool. We got a Player in his prime from Engerland.

I remember back headers into the pay of on rushing strikers more than once.

Hey but that was then
1990-91 Paul McStay Nil
1991-92 Paul McStay Nil
1992-93 Paul McStay Nil
1993-94 Paul McStay Nil
1994-95 Paul McStay Scottish Cup
1995-96 Paul McStay Nil
1996-97 Paul McStay Nil
1997-98 Tom Boyd Scottish League, League Cup

This is now and exciting times.

16.) 29 Aug 2016
29 Aug 2016 22:47:20
No he won 3 titles pal! At least if your going to come on and
Spout pish then get the facts straight! And did u not read the part about that mob across the city cheating there way to those titles! didn't matter who was captain, we still wouldn't have won them! And the fact u question Paul mcstays status as a Celtic legend makes me question that your a Celtic fan! Do players who are not legends get voted into there clubs greatest team of all time? A vote by the fans by the way! Which I seriously have my doubts u are!

17.) 29 Aug 2016
29 Aug 2016 23:31:12
Aindoh I'm not the only one saying he's one our greatest midfielders! Thousands of fans voted him as one our greatest ever players! So I guess they don't know what they'r talking about either! And a midfielder has to be creative to be considered great! Away and don't talk pish! Keane and viera are 2 that spring to mind straight away
Who weren't creative players, were they not great player?
And I don't know what I'm taking about!

18.) 29 Aug 2016
29 Aug 2016 23:33:28
I knew someone would question my timness - as if my opinion was less important because you want to have Paul McStays babies Wiss81.

My uncle was Peter Maley - recognise the surname - his Granfather was Wullie. so the club is actually in my blood!

I worked in the building at 213 Orr Street for 20 years.

I attended whole seasons of dross - including Jungles Last Stand and etc I could list thousands of incidents and events.

Highlighs - V St Johnston to win the league for the first time in 9 years. Every Henrik Goal.
Watching DiCanio/ PVH/ Andy Thom/ Cadette - home and away in the fecking cold rain and snow and sleet.

If you think I'm a blue nose - just go and look at the top 2 posts in Servo page.

What I am is a Celtic Fan not afraid to tell it how it is, not to be blinkered by the floodlights and to realised that Paul McStay won NOTHING as celtic captain -

if that's the level of success you want, you are seriously sounding not like a celtic fan.

When we finished 5th in the league - were they all cheating?

Again In my Very Humble Opinion - Paul McStay - a very very talented footballer was too SOFT to be an effective captain. and that added to our misery - Christ TOM BOYD stepped up and we won! and he's a pussy cat too.

19.) 30 Aug 2016
30 Aug 2016 00:02:10
Hahahahaha! Aye nae bother! The club is in your blood! I can't even argue anymore wae that! U batter in mate hahahaha! Belter.

20.) 30 Aug 2016
30 Aug 2016 00:05:13
"Thousands of fans voted him as one our greatest ever players! "

and 200 wouldn't even buy his book

So if success is not measured by titles - then how is it measured.

One club man - great but not successful
Solid player - great but not successful
blood sweat and tears - great but not success

it was even the fact that we were runners up to cheats as suggested. we were not second - for SEVEN consecutive years.

I measure success by success - hey but what do I know, I hope the current team is successful by winning stuff - not by being 1 club men, solid and BS&T.

What a shame digi all that time standing in the jungle and you didn't know what you were watching. Just out of interest were you facing the pitch. Do you know why the financially doped rangers didn't thrash us game after game when we had hopeless players and managers. Paul McStay that's why! I watched him play them almost himself and I thanked God he was in our team. No more of this nonsense please for your own sake it's just plain rubbish.

23.) 30 Aug 2016
30 Aug 2016 08:21:50
I also disagree with the assessment of McStay, but, I respect that done don't. Can't understand it but it's somebody's opinion. To question his loyalties over that is a bit harsh and us a default position I hate.

He might be talking pish, which I think he is. But he has the right. Show me a man or woman on here who hasn't at some point.

I read half the posts on here and scratch my head and know people do the same with mine. It's fitba.

24.) 30 Aug 2016
30 Aug 2016 11:41:16
I am not saying PMcS wasn't loyal, hard working, talented, skilful, and one hundred other words to praise him.

I am just saying I don't think he was an effective captain - in fact read the stats we was the worst captain in Celtics history.

I agree with everyone about his ability and loyalty - my point is during his tenure we didn't win a thing - all things considered that's a failure.

25.) 31 Aug 2016
29 Aug 2016 22:15:12
So was I, whilst I will always defend youryour right to espouse your opinion, I would question your memory. McStay was and always will be a truly talented Celtic man in what were really dire times. Catch up with some of the Video clips of the time and see who was playing with and the SFA and pre Sevco era. Just sayin.

26.) 31 Aug 2016
29 Aug 2016 22:38:52
correction he won 3 titles not as cptn and we finished outside the top 2 for 7 consecutive seasons.

Im just looking at the official stats now as I just remembered the dark days - wish I hadn't started reading all this.

it was bad - worse than I remembered. I think he wouldn't consider his captaincy a success and I think we all agree.
